1. In the early twentieth, people suffered through many wars.
20世纪初，人们在很多战争中受苦受难。
suffer为动词，意为“患有(疾病等)；经受”，常与from搭配构成suffer from ...，意为“受(某种病痛)折磨；因……而受苦”。
e.g. The patient is still suffering.
病人仍很痛苦。
I am suffering from a headache.
我正在遭受头痛之苦。
They suffered from a serious flood last year.
去年他们遭受一场大水灾。
through的意思是“在整个……期间；从头至尾”。
e.g. He studied his project through the night.
他研究他的课题研究了一整夜。

2. The headquarters of the UN is in New York City.
联合国总部位于纽约市。
headquarters是一个单复同形的名词，意思是“总部，总机构；司令部，指挥部”。
这样的词还有means（方法，手段）, works（工厂）, species（种类）, series（系列）, barracks（营房）等。
其后动词的单复数形式取决于这些名
词是用作单数，还是用作复数。

宾语从句
用作宾语的从句叫做宾语从句。
一、引导词
1. 由that引导的宾语从句。that在句中只起连接作用，没有实际意义，也不在从句中充当任何成分，that在口语中常省略。
2. 由whether或if引导的宾语从句。
whether和if都有“是否”的意思，不能省略。
3. 由who，what，which，how，
when，where，why等引导的宾语从句。这些词在宾语从句中有其本身的含义，并充当一定的成分，不能省略。
二、语序
宾语从句要用陈述句语序。
三、时态
1. 如果主句是一般现在时，宾语从句可用各种时态；如果主句是一般过去时，从句也常用相应的过去时态。
2. 宾语从句表示客观事实或真理时，其时态不受主句限制，需用一般现在时。
