Do you want to surprise❷ your friends? Brian,Danny and I did an experiment in science class this week. I suggest❸ you try it,too❹! First,get a jar full of water and a piece of cardboard. Cover the jar with the cardboard and turn the jar over. Next,take your hand off. Can you guess what happens? The cardboard holds the water in the jar! The air pressure pushing up on the cardboard is higher than that of the water pushing down from inside the jar. The higher air pressure outside the jar holds the cardboard in place.

Science is interesting. Don’t you think so?

没有水,什么也活不了。

without后常接名词、代词或动名词词组。

eg:My father went out without saying a word.

我父亲一句话也没有说就出去了。

【点拨】句意:不要不吃早饭就去上学。这是个坏习惯。 

after 在……之后;with表示伴随;without表示没有,故选C。 

知识点2

surprise/sə'praɪz/ v.使惊奇  n.惊喜,惊奇 

eg:The results might surprise you!

结果可能使你惊讶!

surprise为及物动词,后面直接跟宾语,意为“使惊奇,使感到惊讶”。

eg:You surprise me. 你使我感到惊讶。

surprised 是surprise的过去分词形式,可以作形容词,通常作表语,表示人的状态,意为“吃惊的”。短语:be surprised at/by为固定搭配,意为“对……感到吃惊”。

eg:All of them were surprised at the UFO.

他们都对不明飞行物感到吃惊。

surprise为名词,意为“惊奇;使人惊奇的事”。 也可以构成词组:in surprise“惊讶地”;to one’s surprise“令某人吃惊的是”。 

eg:I have a surprise for you. 

我有一个惊喜给你。 

To my surprise, he can finish this work in a short time.

令我吃惊的是,他能在很短的时间内完成这项工作。
